2009-2010 Graduate Fellowship

GK-12 Graduate Student Fellow Responsibilities 2009-2010

Duration of appointment: June 15, 2009–June 14, 2010

The project will provide:

  • Guidance and support for the development of field and classroom activities to be carried out by you and your teacher partner(s) with K-12 students

  • Supplies and equipment for field and classroom activities

  • Travel expenses for field trips

  • Logistical support for field trips (help with transportation, scheduling, etc.)

  • Stipend of $30,000 to be paid monthly over one year of participation in the project

  • Student fees will be covered for the year of participation in project

  • Some flexibility in scheduling to accommodate fellows' research schedules, as long as project obligations are met

Responsibilities of Graduate Student Fellows:

Spend an average of 15 hours per week during the school year (similar to the time commitment for a GSI position) on project activities including:

  • Time in the classroom conducting demonstrations, presentations, hands-on activities with students (about 3 hours per week)

  • Attending team meetings (about 2 hours per week) — these meetings are used for preparing and testing lesson activities, preparing materials for lessons, field trip planning, clean-up of materials and equipment, discussion of teaching and classroom issues

  • Written reflective reviews of lessons each week

  • Providing lesson write-ups for classroom and field activities for posting on website

  • Planning and attending meetings with your teacher partner(s) and grad student fellow partner(s) re curricular goals, teaching strategies, lesson and field trip planning, etc.

  • Planning and leading weekend field trips to a UC Field Station

  • Planning and leading field trips to local sites or BNHM

Communicate regularly with all team members: fellows, teachers, coordinator

Help students develop and maintain a collection of specimens for their school

Participate in planning and preparation activities beginning this spring and continuing over the summer, including:

  • Introductory/orientation meeting this May/June

  • Classroom visits this May to observe students and partner teachers

  • Planning and training workshops to be scheduled over the summer*

  • Exploratory visits to field stations

  • Complete pre-, mid- and post-project questionnaires and end-of-project evaluation

Comply with Tuberculosis Testing and Fingerprinting requirements of participating schools

Be a role model for high school students with whom you work

Be a resource for your teacher partner(s)

*Note: summer meeting schedule will be set in May so we can try to best accommodate fellows' individual research activities
