GK-12 Graduate Student Fellowship Application 2009-2010

To apply to the program, you must:

Give Information for Advisors page to your advisors

Submit the following information (in the order listed below).

  1. Basic information:
       • Name
       • Department
       • Name of advisor
       • Thesis title/topic
       • Month and year Ph.D. program started
       • Date of qualifying exam
       • Campus address and campus phone or cell phone number
       • Email address

  2. Indicate if you are interested in working
       • only at a local Bay Area school
       • with schools near our field stations (requires three full weeks of full time at Sagehen in September/early October)
       • either of the above

  3. Letter of intent summarizing the nature of your interest in the project. This letter should include a statement of
       • why you are interested in participating in this project
       • what you feel you can contribute to the project
       • one or two ideas about how your research or area of interest could be incorporated into lessons and/or field activities for middle school students
       • your career goals and where you see yourself in five years.

  4. Relevant experience
       • List relevant coursework taken at UC or previously (e.g., ecology, evolution, animal behavior, botany, taxonomic courses, statistics, phylogenetics, bioinformatics)
       • List specific areas in which you have natural history or field expertise (e.g., CA plant identification, small mammal trapping, bird identification, sampling aquatic arthropods, etc.)
       • List courses which you have taught as a Graduate Student Instructor
       • Describe previous experience with K-12 students or programs (if any)

  5. Short statement describing your dissertation research project

  6. Copy of your CV (including educational background, academic and other relevant appointments, publications, if any, and grants & awards, if any).

  7. Copy of transcripts (unofficial Bearfacts copies are okay)

  8. Letter from your advisor indicating your suitability for the program and their approval of your participation (may be sent separately by advisor). Please give your advisor the Information for Advisors page of this notice.

Applications are due on or before March 23, 2009; later applications will be considered if open slots remain

Interviews will be arranged for early April, after we have reviewed applications.
